Winter Nature Series to Begin

The Riverbank Lodge/Athens State Bank 2015 Winter Nature Series will begin on January 15th with a presentation which explains the threat of the Emerald Ash Borer and what can be done to deter its advance as much as possible.  The presenter will be Scott Schirmer of the Illinois Department of Agriculture.  Mr Schirmer is from Dekalb, Illinois and is the point man responsible for monitoring and slowing this threat to ash trees in Illinois.  This is a serious threat to all ash trees and he will be able to inform us of the steps being taken to deal with the spread of the emerald ash borer.

Our Second event will be on February 5, 2015 with a presentation by Dr. Michael Wiant, site manager of Dixon Mounds Museum.  Mike will discuss how the War of 1812 and the strength of the Potawatomi and Kickapoo tribes resulted in settlement patterns of early Illinois including New Salem.

Our final presentation of the season will be held on February 26, 2015 by Kent Massie of Massie, Massie and Associates.  Kent is a landscape architect and land planner and is helping the Illinois DNR develop a program to enhance the Sangamon River as a recreational and educational resource.  He and DNR are working to have a National Water Trail designation on the stretch of the Sangamon River from Decatur to Petersburg.  Kent will give a status report on that effort and provide many of the details of the proposed water trail for the first time to the general public.

These events are co-sponsored by RiverBank Lodge and Athens State Bank.  The programs are free and open to the public.  Refreshments will be served.  Starting time for all sessions is 6:30 pm at the RiverBank Lodge.
